Description:
Bach chose an unconventional beginning for the nine-movement cantata "Schau, lieber Gott, wie meine Feind" BWV 153, which he composed for the Sunday after New Year in 1724, his first year in office as cantor of St. Thomas' Church. Instead of the usual opening chorus, the cantata opens with a simple four-part chorale movement. There is also a chorale in the center (movement 5) and at the end. By dispensing with extended or demanding choral movements, Bach presumably wanted to spare his "Thomaner", who had a strenuous week of almost non-stop work behind them. The cantata is therefore probably content with just three soloists (alto, tenor, bass). The arias, each preceded by a secco recitative, are accompanied by two violins and two violas.
