The "Stabat mater", composed in 1736 shortly before the early death of the 26-year-old Pergolesi, quickly attracted attention. The importance of the work was soon so great that none other than Johann Sebastian Bach performed a German version based on the 51st Psalm. In addition, numerous copies, prints and arrangements bear witness to the enormous popularity of the work, which continues to this day through many performances and recordings.

For the present edition, the autograph was also compared with a very early Neapolitan score for the first time, which is presumably based on the parts of the first performance. The insights gained in this way have been incorporated into the musical text and are explained in detail in the Critical Report.
