Description:
Bach's choral cantata with the opening text "Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich verlassen kann" BWV 139 was performed for the first time on November 12, 1724 at the main church service in Leipzig. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is a praise of trust in God. The opening chorus, which is filled with intimacy and echoes the hymn melody throughout, is followed by the lively tenor aria "God is my friend", a musical depiction of the adversaries raging in vain, and in the bass aria "Misfortune strikes on all sides", Bach unfolds drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts in the tenor aria has been lost; the edition offers a reconstruction here. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria apparently goes back to a lost part for violoncello piccolo. The edition allows performance with both violin and violoncello.
