Description:
In addition to the scholarly-critical editions of Johannes Brahms' trios published by Bärenreiter, an arrangement of the String Sextet op. 18 for piano trio is published here, made by Brahms' friend Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903).
The publisher Simrock published the work in 1883. Brahms commented on the arrangement of his sextet with great enthusiasm and praise for the skill of his friend Kirchner.
Christopher Hogwood's scholarly-critical edition includes a preface that sheds light on the genesis of the trio, the arrangement as an independent work and the relationship between Brahms and Kirchner.
