Description:
Christopher Hogwood's scholarly-critical edition of Brahms's famous piano trio is based on the two main sources, the first edition and the autograph.
The preface to the present edition offers clues to contemporary performance practice: Hogwood draws here on remarks by Fanny Davis, a pupil of Brahms. She describes how Brahms played the trio with Joseph Joachim and Robert Hausmann in an informal house music circle in Baden-Baden, presumably in 1895, with Clara Schumann turning the pages. Davis' comments refer to articulation, dynamics and tempo, i.e. the practical performance parameters on which little concrete information is available.
