Brahms' important Horn Trio op. 40 from 1865 was originally intended by the composer for the valveless natural horn and occupies a special place in his oeuvre. The work is said to have had a close emotional connection to his mother, who had died three months earlier.

Christopher Hogwood analyzes a newly discovered source for the present edition, which therefore could not previously be included in any edition; this source proves that Brahms wrote at least the trio movement 12 years earlier - in 1853 - for solo piano. This piano setting is printed in the appendix.

This Urtext edition not only offers the standard scoring for violin, horn and piano, but also for cello or viola instead of the horn. The variants for cello and viola appear in the score on ossia staves.

An informative preface describes the work's genesis, performance and publication history and offers notes on performance practice; the Critical Report contains facsimile pages and completes this ground-breaking edition.
