Description:
The cantata "Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest" BWV 194 was composed on the occasion of the organ dedication in Störmthal on November 2, 1723. One year later and with only minor changes, the cantata was performed again in Leipzig on Trinity Sunday. Our edition is based on this Leipzig version from 1724. The special occasion for its composition is already reflected in its length, which comprises twelve movements instead of the usual six. Bach added three obbligato oboes to the strings. A special feature of the cantata is its orchestral suite structure. It begins with a lively opening chorus in the style of a French overture. The bass aria in the third movement has the character of a pastorale, the following aria (movement 5) again that of a gavotte and so on. A simple four-part chorale concludes the multi-faceted composition, which is characterized by very intimate moments.
