Description:
Although "Warum betrübst du dich, mein Herz" BWV 138 is based on the hymn of the same name, it is not one of Bach's chorale cantatas. In this unusual composition from Bach's first year, further chorale verses are not paraphrased in the chorale-free sections (as in the choral cantatas); instead, the chorale enters into a dialog with the recitatives, reflecting confidence, while the doubts are articulated in the recitatives. This leads to the recitative and chorale merging into larger movement units. In the cantata's only aria, trust in God has finally prevailed. The cantata ends with a final chorale verse, in the interludes between the lines of which Bach ignites a roaring virtuoso firework display.
