Description:
With its detailed scene directions and many short forms such as accompagnato recitatives and ariosi, "Belshazzar" is the most dramatic of George Frideric Handel's oratorios. In fact, it is even a sacred opera, but due to the ban on biblical acts on stage in England at the time, it had to retain the form of an oratorio, i.e. a non-staged performance. Handel chose one of the most gripping subjects in world and religious history for it: the fall of Babylon and the liberation of the Jewish people. The Carus Urtext edition brings together all three performable versions of the work: that of the first performance in 1745 and the adaptations of 1751 and 1758. For the first time, the edition consistently follows Handel's conducting score, which provides clarity about the pieces actually performed by Handel. The aria "Lament not thus", which was deleted before the premiere, has been added to the edition, so that all the choruses and arias composed by Handel for "Belshazzar" are available together, right up to the late, little-known arias "Wise men" and "Fain would I know". / - First Urtext edition - For the first time all three performable versions of the work in one edition - Consistently based on Handel's conducting score - With the addition of the aria "Lament not thus", which was deleted before the premiere
