Description:
Only the text and the last sheet of the autograph score have survived from the Christmas cantata "Glory to God in the highest" BWV 197.1 (197a), beginning with the end of the 2nd aria. This, as well as the completely preserved 3rd aria, are contained in parodies in the wedding cantata BWV 197 / BWV3 197.2, from which the cantata received its BWV number. There has long been an exciting theory about the lost opening chorus: could it have been the parody model for the Gloria of the Mass in B minor? The musicologist and organist Pieter Dirksen has investigated this, created a four-part choral version largely derived from corrections in the autograph of the B minor Mass and underlaid the text of the opening chorus (the German translation of the Gloria). The result is a convincing version of the Christmas cantata - with one of Bach's best-known choruses as the prominent opening chorus and plausible solutions for the other parts missing from the autograph / This is a reconstruction of the incomplete surviving Christmas cantata BWV3 197.1. The Wedding Cantata BWV3 197.2, in which Bach incorporated two movements from the Christmas cantata, was published under Carus 31.197/50.
