Description:
The cantata "Ich liebe den Höchsten von ganzem Gemüte" BWV 174 was composed for Whit Monday in 1729. It probably belongs to Bach's fourth cantata cycle, the so-called "Picander cycle". The introductory Sinfonia takes up the largest part of the cantata. It is a parody of the 1st movement from the famous 3rd Brandenburg Concerto BWV 1048. Bach took the movement almost unchanged and only added sound-enhancing wind parts to the 9 string parts (3 violins, 3 violas, 3 cellos) and the basso continuo: 2 corni da caccia, 2 oboes - reinforced by 2 violins - and an alto pommer (waist) together with a viola. The following movements (aria, recitative, aria) form a clear contrast to this with their chamber music scoring (2 oboes or 1 or 2 string parts with basso continuo). A simple four-part chorale forms the conclusion of the cantata.
