Description:
A theorist, historian and teacher with great prerogatives, Stanislao Mattei also had a considerable career as a composer; it took place first in S. Francesco, succeeding Father Giambattista Martini in the magisterium of the chapel, then as philharmonic academician and chapel master in S. Petronio. The catalogue of his compositions includes in particular liturgical and devotional music; among the latter stands out the Oratorio della Passione, a score at the time much admired, loved and sought after. In the New Theory of Music, the theorist and historian of music Carlo Gervasoni defines Mattei's oratorio as "his masterpiece": a "composition, which, according to the sentiment of various intelligent people, for its depth, taste and true expression of devout feelings, surpasses all that has been understood in this genre of the best masters".
