On the occasion of the dedication of a new orphanage on Vienna’s Rennweg, Mozart—who was just twelve years old in 1768—appeared before the audience as both composer and conductor with his "Missa solemnis" in C minor, K. 139. This astonishing early work follows the form of a Neapolitan cantata mass, whose individual movements—such as the "Gloria" and "Credo"—are in turn composed of self-contained choruses, ariosi, and ensembles. A characteristic feature of this frequently performed Mass is the sharp contrast between a cheerful overall mood in C major and dramatic, somber passages in minor.
