Description:
Johann Sebastian Bach’s four orchestral suites (BA 5252–BA 5255) belong to that special group of Baroque orchestral works that have always been extremely popular and frequently performed. They likely date from Bach’s creative period in Köthen between 1717 and 1723.
The only surviving sources are copyist parts from Leipzig. The corresponding volume of the "Neue Bach-Ausgabe" based on these was published by Bärenreiter in 1967. On this basis, Bärenreiter also published practical performance materials including a full score and parts, though with additional articulation markings and performance suggestions.
This new edition of the important overtures presents the Urtext of the "New Bach Edition"" without editorial additions. The orchestral parts are typeset anew. Also included is an alternative version of the Overture and Air from Suite BWV 1068 with "Violino concertato."
