Bach's cantata BWV 69a from 1723, which has remained largely unknown to this day, is available for the first time in a practical edition with this Carus edition. Unjustly, though not by chance, the work had fallen into the shadow of the cantata of the same name BWV 69, to which Bach had reworked the work to celebrate the Leipzig council election in 1748. For the sake of simplicity, Bach continued to use the parts from 1723 and adapted them for the new purpose by making deletions, changes and additions - which, of course, did not mean that he rejected the 1723 version. It can also be easily recovered from the parts of 1723 if one goes back to the changes of 1748. With its rich wind instrumentation and the large opening chorus, the cantata from 1723 is in no way inferior to the later festive music in terms of splendor of sound. The text takes the Sunday Gospel of the healing of the deaf-mute as an occasion for praise and thanksgiving for God's good deeds. In contrast to the later version, in which God is thanked for the wisdom of the Leipzig authorities, the original version from 1723 is free of such time-bound references and can be used in a variety of ways in church services and concerts. / This is the earlier version of the cantata for the 12th Sunday after Trinity (BWV3 69.1). The later version as a cantata for the council election (BWV3 69.2) has been published under the number Carus 31.069/00.
