Description:
Turning one's energy to sacred music remains the artist's highest goal, wrote Robert Schumann in January 1851 - even though he had hardly appeared as a composer of sacred music up to that point. In fact, the following year he composed his Missa sacra op. 147 and the Requiem op. 148, in which he sought new forms of expression for the liturgical text and for this reason repeatedly deviated from the exact wording of the original. Both the text and the overall musical conception of his Requiem point beyond the church to its use in the concert hall.
This arrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, timpani and strings) allows the work to be performed by a smaller ensemble while at the same time preserving its distinct choral-symphonic character.
Original version: Soli (SATB), Coro (SATB), 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 2 Fg, 2 Cor, 2 Tr, 3 Trb, Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb, arrangement for chamber orchestra: Soli (SATB), Coro (SATB), Fl, Ob, Clt, Fg, Cor, Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb
