The path my work will take in the coming years depends on the accuracy of the score. Mahler made this demand not only of C. F. Kahnt, the first publisher of the Sixth Symphony, but also of himself. The premiere scores, which he painstakingly collated down to the smallest detail, bear eloquent witness to this. Why, then, have they never been evaluated for an edition in terms of their content? The fact that the "Tragic" is now available in a strikingly clearly edited form is thanks to the editors, who took seriously what was so important to Mahler. The edition dispels numerous myths, misinterpretations, and misunderstandings, frees the musical text from long-standing errors, and ensures the necessary transparency in the revision report.
