Description:
About eight months after Antonín Dvořák’s death (May 1, 1904), his son-in-law Josef Suk began composing a symphony in memory of him. While still working on the piece, Suk suffered a second blow of fate—the death of his beloved wife, Otilie. He dedicated the symphony, consisting of five movements, to Dvořák and his daughter Otilie, and named his work after the angel of death, "Asrael."."
The primary source for this edition was the first printing of the score (1907), supplemented by Suk’s corrections (1921), which had been suggested by the conductor Václav Talich. The most significant change was the expansion of the orchestra to include a fifth and sixth horn ad libitum.
