Description:
Handel's "Sonata a cinque" for violin solo, strings (reinforced with oboes ad lib.) and continuo was probably written during his stay in Italy in 1707 and remains his only violin concerto. The Italian influence, especially Arcangelo Corelli, is noticeable, even if Handel goes to work with more imagination and greater expression. The composition is part of a series of early solo concertos that inspired his Concerti grossi, op. 3 and 6. The Andante opens with a graceful melody that Handel also used in other works. In the interplay between solo violin and orchestra, it is divided into motifs, expanded and varied at the end. The five-part, "chordal" Adagio surprises with a chromatically condensed sequence of seventh chords in various inversions. The final movement, on the other hand, shows spacious solo passages, interrupted by "thunderous" tutti interjections.
