Karl Hoyer (1891-1936), a highly esteemed pupil of Max Reger and Thomaskantor Karl Straube, was a professor at the famous Leipzig Institute of Church Music.

After his chorale preludes op. 57 were previously only available in libraries or antiquarian bookshops, volume III of the four-volume edition now makes another part of this important collection generally accessible again.

Formal variety, practicable brevity and moderate technical demands characterize the works from the period of transition between late Romanticism and the organ movement, which were well known in organist circles during Hoyer's lifetime. Compared to the first edition, the keys have been adapted to those of the "Evangelisches Gesangbuch" and the "Gotteslob". Practical indexes (similar to "EG" and "Gotteslob") are included with each volume.
