Die Six Sonates pour le Clavecin ou le Pianoforte denen die hier ausgewählten drei Sonaten entnommen sind, zählten kurz nach ihrem Erscheinen im Jahr 1764 zu den beliebtesten Alben der klavierspielenden Welt, und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart erwies dem Komponisten seine Reverenz, in dem er diese drei Sonaten für Klavierquartett bearbeitete. Die heitere Kunst Johann Christian Bachs hat Leopold Mozart so beurteilt: Das Kleine ist gross, wenn es natürlich-fliessend und leicht geschrieben und gründlich gesetzt ist. Es so zu machen ist schwerer, als alle die den Meistern unverständlichen, künstlichen harmonischen Progressionen und schwer auszuführenden Melodien. Hat sich Bach dadurch heruntergesetzt? - Keineswegs. Der gute Satz und die Ordnung - il filio -, dieses unterscheidet den Meister vom Stümper auch in Kleinigkeiten.
