Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations", composed between 1819 and 1823, mark the peak of his variation output and, like Bach's "Goldberg Variations", are among the most important contributions to this art form. In addition to Beethoven, 50 other Austrian, especially Viennese, composers responded to Diabelli's call to vary his catchy waltz, including Czerny, Moscheles, Fr. Mozart, Schubert, the eleven-year-old Liszt and Joh. N. Hummel.

The variations fictitiously printed by Diabelli as "Vaterländischer Künstlerverein Teil I" (Beethoven's op. 120) and "Teil II" (the 50 variations by the "most excellent composers and virtuosos of Vienna") are presented together for the first time by Mario Aschauer, including the variations of Part II in the Urtext for the first time. The reliably edited musical text, based on meticulous evaluation of the sources, makes relevant deviations from the main sources visible for the first time in gray halftone.

A detailed Critical Report (English) and practical performance notes on Viennese piano playing in Beethoven's time round off this special Urtext edition, which reflects the latest state of research.
