Beethoven's Sonata in C minor, his first great sonata and exemplary for the type of characteristic sonata of the late 18th century, has lost none of its fascination to this day due to its passionate pathos and high musical-emotional unity. While the first sketches probably date back to 1796, Beethoven did not compose the sonata until 1798/99, in the context of his String Trio in C minor op. 9 from 1797/98, and published it in Vienna in December 1799.
This single edition of the famous sonata, edited true to the source by Jonathan Del Mar, reflects the current state of Beethoven scholarship. The Urtext edition is aimed at advanced piano students as well as pianists and teachers with a reader-friendly score and practical turning points and, in addition to a historical preface and a detailed critical report, contains informative notes on performance practice.
