Schubert's piano sonatas, composed between 1818 and 1825, comprise four completed and five unfinished works. His breakthrough came in 1825 with the works in C major D 840, known as the Reliquie, in A minor D 845, the first of his sonatas ever to be printed during his lifetime in 1826 with the title Première Grande Sonate, and in D major D 850. H. G. Nägeli wrote enthusiastically to Czerny shortly afterwards: I definitely count Schubert the piano composer among the good, indeed excellent ones.

With the middle works, the three-volume Bärenreiter Urtext edition of Schubert's piano sonatas is now complete. An informative preface on the genesis and source situation as well as knowledgeable notes on the piano playing of Schubert's time (including articulation, pedal use, ornamentation) with a special focus on Schubert's characteristic accent notation introduce the sonatas.

The Critical Commentary lists in particular interpretationally relevant readings. Schubert's sketches and sonata fragments are accessible via the Bärenreiter homepage.
