Description:
The trigger for the piano cycle "Pictures at an Exhibition", composed in 1874, was the memorial exhibition organized in the same year for the painter and architect Viktor Hartmann, who died in 1873 and was a friend of the composer. It is not only Mussorgsky's most important contribution to piano music, but the cycle occupies a unique position in the 19th century piano repertoire due to its reference to Hartmann's paintings and the compositional realization of this idea.
