Description:
At the end of 1821, Beethoven began work on op. 111, his last piano sonata, which has been regarded as the pinnacle since its publication and to which Thomas Mann dedicated a literary monument in Dr. Faustus. Like op. 110, this last sonata was also engraved by Maurice Schlesinger in Paris in order to be quite brilliant, but in fact the first French printing contained numerous errors, much to Beethoven's annoyance. The unusual two-movement form of the sonata, ending with an Adagio, led Schlesinger to ask Beethoven whether the Allegro movement had been accidentally forgotten by the scribe. No answer from the composer is known.
