Description:
The Sonata in F major op. 54, written in 1804 immediately after the highly virtuoso "Waldstein" Sonata, is still unjustly overshadowed by its predecessor and the subsequent "Appassionata" in F minor op. 57. Both movements are musically characterized by the conflicting juxtaposition of traditional form and musical creative will: While the first movement "In Tempo d'un Menuetto" plays with baroque gestures and a sharply contrasting, metrically distorted "Trio", the toccata-like Allegretto wanders between etude and sonata form. The unusual structure of the sonata caused perplexity even among renowned critics who thought they did not recognize the master and made the work a musical insider tip to this day.
In his new edition, the world-renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar meticulously examines all available sources and presents a highly reliable musical text with an elegant engraving and practical turning points, supplemented by a detailed critical commentary as well as an informative introduction and indispensable notes on questions of historical performance practice (including pedal use, articulation, trills, dynamics, accents).
