Description:
It is hard to imagine that this very lyrical and moderately difficult piano sonata in the unusual key of F sharp major was preceded by the highly dramatic Sonata in f op. 57 ("Appassionata", BA 10852). Beethoven dedicated the work to his pupil Therese von Brunsvick. Beethoven scholars sometimes referred to her as the "Immortal Beloved", and the sonata also owes its nickname "À Thérèse" to her. Beethoven himself greatly appreciated the F sharp major sonata, which he considered to be "better" than the incomparably better-known Sonata op. 27 no. 2 in C sharp minor ("Moonlight Sonata", BA 10853).
The internationally renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar presents the sonata in a reliable and coherent musical text that comes closest to the composer's intention, evaluating all available sources. Readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary. An informative introduction is supplemented by knowledgeable notes on historical performance practice, in which important questions such as pedal use, dynamics, articulation and ornamentation are answered. The elegant musical notation with practical turnarounds invites you to study this musically demanding sonata.
