Description:
In a letter to Breitkopf & Härtel, Beethoven described the little sonata op. 79 as a "Sonate facile" or "Sonatine". It is an indispensable part of piano lessons for advanced beginners. The creation of this lively work with its well-known opening movement entitled "Presto alla tedesca" is due to Muzio Clementi. The latter had been able to persuade the "haughty beauty Beethoven" in laborious negotiations to compose two new sonatas, the later works op. 78 and 79.
The internationally renowned Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar presents the sonata in a reliable and coherent musical text that comes closest to the composer's intention, evaluating all available sources. Readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary.
