Description:
Josef Suk’s (1874–1935) one-movement String Quartet No. 2 was composed at the height of his compositional career. This demanding work, with its complex harmonies and motifs, which the composer completed in Krecovice in May 1911, was considered avant-garde for its time: The Berlin performance in November 1912 was therefore met with protests from the audience.
Zdenek Nouza now presents the first critical edition. The primary source is the first edition of the score published by the Berlin publisher Simrock. However, the printed parts—which contain valuable interpretive additions—were also evaluated, as was the copy of the score used for the first printing, featuring Suk’s autograph corrections, along with other sources, including the sketches.
