After years of several personal and creative crises, the last two years of Beethoven's life were characterized by an irrepressible creative urge. This was directed almost exclusively towards the genre of the string quartet.
Of all these late works, the Quartet in A minor op. 132 is the one that most impressively addresses the overcoming of the creative crises of the previous years. The middle of the five movements is a Canzona di ringraziamento, entitled: Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit in der lydischen Tonart.
A slow introduction is followed in this movement by the heading: neue Kraft fühlend. Because of this middle movement full of divine power, this string quartet is one of Beethoven's most emotional compositions ever.
For this new edition of the Quartet op. 132, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar consulted the autograph as well as several sets of parts corrected by Beethoven. This enabled him to correct countless inconsistencies and unconvincing readings in earlier editions.
