Description:
Beethoven worked on his String Quartet in F major op. 135 in Gneixendorf near Krems, where he hoped to recover with his nephew Karl from his failed suicide attempt in the summer of 1826. The work stands out among Beethoven's late quartets due to the often cheerful, almost pastoral character of its four movements. Since Beethoven's death, it has often been interpreted as the composer's attempt to draw a wise, positive balance after the personal, family and health difficulties of the previous years. This seems to emerge impressively from the famous last movement, "Der schwer gefasste Entschluss", whose motto is: "Must it be? It must be done! It must be!"
The edition of this quartet was particularly complex, as the authentic sources were edited by Beethoven at various stages. By carefully assessing them, the editor Jonathan Del Mar is able to clarify discrepancies that can be found in previous editions.
