The fourth volume, developed by cello specialist Michael Corßen, is dedicated almost exclusively to playing in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions are introduced and practiced using well-known songs and small, attractive pieces, some of which were specially contributed by Bertold Hummel. Changes of position are initially marked with a sign so that these transitions can be practiced explicitly: The booklet provides a wide range of suggestions and encourages imaginative and varied practicing. This important area of playing technique is rounded off by an excursion into the 5th and 6th positions in the last part of the cello school. The booklet also introduces the tenor clef and explains the production of harmonics, which are practiced in small pieces.

The pupils have now reached a level of playing technique that enables them to make their first excursions into the 'real' cello literature parallel to the fourth booklet: The 40 Easy Etudes op. 70 by Sebastian Lee (BA 9401) and the Fifteen Easy, Melodic-Harmonic Etudes op. 76, 1 by David Popper (BA 6979), for example, are a good supplement. The collection Concert Pieces for Cello and Piano (BA 9695) and the series Bärenreiter's Concert Pieces, also edited by Christoph Sassmannshaus, offer numerous musically rewarding works that build a bridge to the demanding standard repertoire for the cello.

The authors
The school Early Beginnings on the Cello (Das Standardwerk für junge Streicher), published in 1976 by Egon Saßmannshaus, one of the most experienced and renowned violin teachers in Germany, quickly became the most popular and best-selling school for beginners of cello playing in the German-speaking world. His son-in-law Michael Corßen, co-author of the third and fourth booklets, is a baroque cellist and conductor. He runs a music school in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The accumulated knowledge and experience of the Saßmannshaus/Corßen family make the four volumes of this standard work for young string players the most thorough and well thought-out cello school for beginners in the world.
