Beethoven is regarded as the true inventor of the cello sonata as an independent genre in which cello and piano act as equal partners, writes Barry Cooper in his introduction to the Bärenreiter edition of all five sonatas. The editor of the edition (BA09012 Beethoven, Sonatas for Piano and Cello) is the Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar. His fundamental new edition was awarded "Best Edition 2005" by the German Music Publishers Association.
Bärenreiter is presenting this single edition of the Cello Sonata in A major op. 69 as part of the publication of a series of popular works from its program for the 100th anniversary of the publishing house. The work dates from the composer's "middle" creative period and "combines expansive lyricism and sublimity, great dynamics and a persistently recurring element of unpredictability" (Barry Cooper).
