Description:
Debussy's "Sonata for Violoncello and Piano" was composed in the summer of 1915; it was the first of a planned series of six sonatas for various instruments, of which Debussy ultimately completed only three. Thanks to its unmistakable charm, this work established itself as a standard work in the repertoire from its premiere and is undoubtedly the most frequently performed cello sonata of the 20th century.
Regina Back's Urtext edition is the first to include sketches by Debussy from a private collection, which not only contain an important commentary by the composer regarding the balance of the instruments, but are also used to clarify some of the musical contradictions in the autograph and first edition.
The Bärenreiter Urtext edition is accompanied by a preface (German/English/French) which not only deals with the composition's genesis and first performances, but also contains information on practical performance aspects. A facsimile page and a critical report complete the edition.
