Der italienische Violinist und Komponist Gaetano Pugnani ist in erster Linie durch ein Werk bekannt, das gar nicht von ihm stammt. Seine Violin- und Triosonaten sind ebenso vergessen wie seine sinfonischen und musikdramatischen Werke. Der Name des Turiner Meisters, der nach Stationen in Rom, Paris und London schließlich die Königliche Kapelle seiner Heimatstadt leitete und der u. a. Lehrer des Geigenvirtuosen Giovanni Battista Viotti war, verbindet sich heutzutage mit 'Praeludium und Allegro im Stil von Gaetano Pugnani' des Geigenvirtuosen Fritz Kreisler: Dieser veröffentlichte das Werk in einer Reihe von 'Klassischen Manuskripten' alter Meister, bekannte später aber, dass er all diese Titel selbst komponiert habe. Das Adagio sostenuto ist dagegen eine ausdrucksvolle und gesangliche Originalkomposition Pugnanis, die von Alfred Moffat für Violine und Klavier arrangiert wurde. Vorlage: Stichnummern (StNr.) 03663 (Klavierstimme) und 03889 (Violinstimme), als StNr. 28318 erstmals 1908 veröffentlicht.
