Der ungarische Komponist und Geiger Jenö Hubay, geboren als Eugen Huber, erhielt seine musikalische Ausbildung in Budapest und feierte mit Viottis Violinkonzert Nr. 22 in a-Moll sein Konzertdebut. Drei Jahre lebte er in Berlin, wo er bei Joseph Joachim Violine studierte. Zurückgekehrt, lernte er Franz Liszt kennen, der ihm die Reise nach Paris empfahl. Dort wurde er ein gern gesehener Gast in den musikalischen Salons. Hier schloss er auch Freundschaft mit Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay leitete Violinklassen zunächst in Brüssel, dann für lange Zeit in Budapest. 25 Jahre lang reiste er als Violinvirtuose durch Europa, ließ sich zeitweise in der Schweiz nieder, ehe er für den Rest seines Lebens nach Budapest zurückkehrte. Unter seinen kammermusikalischen Werken findet sich eine Reihe kleinerer Piècen, die er sicherlich für den eigenen Gebrauch in den Salons schrieb. Darunter sind einige Charakterstücke, die der ungarischen Heimat verpflichtet sind, aber auch Exotisches wie die Plaintes arabes (Arabisches Klagelied) - ein expressives und wehmütiges Lamento auf der Violine.
