Description:
The premiere of the azione teatrale "Orfeo ed Euridice" in Vienna in 1762 was a significant event in the history of music theater/With this work, the composer rebelled against the rigid conventions of Italian opera seria for the first time and made his first contribution to the renewal of the opera genre/In collaboration with his librettist Calzabigi, Gluck reduced the story to its essentials and freed it from the political and love intrigues that had previously been typical. The chorus takes up a large amount of space and the ballet is integrated into the plot. Solo and choral singing, instrumental music, pantomime and dance are closely interwoven. The natural simplicity of the vocal style, which largely dispenses with coloratura, contrasts with the virtuoso laryngeal acrobatics of opera seria.
