Thorough bass setting by Eckhart Kuper
Handel's autograph of the cantata *Pensieri notturni di Filli* (Phyllis's Night Thoughts) is preserved at the British Library, London, under the call number RM. 20. e. 2. The cantata was likely composed around 1706. At that time, Handel was in Italy on an extended study trip. A number of corrections and deletions suggest that this is indeed the first version of the work. The cantata is listed in the Handel Works Catalog (HWV) under number 134 and is his only surviving cantata for soprano, alto recorder, and B.c.
This edition follows the autograph as closely as possible. Additions by the editor are marked as such. The text has been carefully adapted to modern spelling; the translation is intended solely to aid in understanding the content.
