The eleventh volume of the Bärenreiter Urtext edition of Schubert's songs seamlessly follows on from the tenth volume with nine songs from August to November 1817 and also contains all the songs from the years 1818 to 1819. For Schubert, these were years of crisis and new beginnings. He left his parental home for good, turned away from established models in his instrumental compositions and went in search of new themes from poets familiar to him, such as Johann Mayrhofer or Aloys Wilhelm Schreiber, as well as from authors unknown to him, such as Franz Grillparzer or Johann Petrus Silbert. Cyclical compositions such as the four songs on hymns by Novalis contained in this volume or the three songs on texts by Mayrhofer, which form a unit, played an important role in his song oeuvre during these years.
