Walther Dürr now presents the fifth volume of the new Urtext edition of Schubert's songs in high, middle and low register. While volumes 1 to 4 of this edition mainly contain songs that Schubert himself gave to print (in his own selection and arrangement), as well as those from the last two years of his life in the fourth volume, the songs in volumes 5ff. arranged strictly in the order of the Deutsch-Verzeichnis, i.e. in principle chronologically.

The songs in the fifth volume were composed between 1811 and 1814. The first - "Hagars Klage" (D 5), dated March 30, 1811 - is also his first fully preserved song. The first eleven songs are evidence of learning (1811-1813/14). During this time, Schubert studied Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and songs, wrote Italian arias as part of his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri and a single verse song ("Klaglied", D 23), which - as the only one of these songs - appeared in print soon after Schubert's death (in November 1830 as op. 131, 3). The great ballad "Der Taucher" (D 77) was composed between 1813 and around the beginning of 1815 as his journeyman's piece, probably not coincidentally at the same time as his first completed opera ("Des Teufels Lustschloss", D 84). He also set 14 poems by Friedrich von Matthisson to music, thus turning to the principle of the strophic song.
