Description:
Beethoven had promised his Horn Sonata op. 17 to one of the most famous horn players of his time, Johann Wenzel. Although, according to an anecdote from his pupil, he only composed the sonata on the day before the premiere, it was a resounding success.
The horn part requires a masterful technique, which is why the publisher Tranquillo Mollo et Comp. published the first edition of 1801 with an alternative part for cello in addition to the horn part. Jonathan Del Mar's scholarly-critical musical text is largely based on this first edition, as the autograph has not survived. This is supplemented by an informative preface (English/German) by Misha Donat on the history and genesis of the work, a critical report (English), a complete description of the sources and a facsimile page.
