Description:
Greensleeves to a Ground presents the famous folk song melody in a form that is of great importance to the development of the art of ornamentation in English instrumental music. It is one of the movements from John Walsh's two-part publication The Division Flute of 1706.
'Division' refers to an improvisational technique in which the melodic line is divided into smaller note values over an ostinato bass ('ground'). The universally known melody Greensleeves dates from the 16th century.
With a few minor exceptions, the edition follows the score published by Walsh in 1706. The accompaniment has been arranged for a keyboard instrument (piano or harpsichord), but can just as easily be taken by guitar or lute. The bass line can be amplified by a cello or viola da gamba.
This edition is part of the Schott Student Edition teaching series, which offers varied repertoire for lessons, concerts and examinations at different levels of difficulty (from easy to difficult). For this, among other popular standard works of music history are published in a modern and clear print. For many pieces the piano accompaniment is available for download.
