Description:
The Grumpy Troll is my first work for unaccompanied tuba. It arose from my ideas of how a very angry Norwegian troll might behave and sound. The opening sets the tone of the work: the raised minor third musically represents the grunting and raging of the troll. The second part portrays a rather active, still angry troll talking incoherently to itself. In the next part, the grunting becomes more expressive, more dreamy. Finally, in the fourth part, the troll runs after what has upset him and you can hear the out-of-breath troll in the exuberance of the tuba player and in the fleeing sound of the open instrument valve. The work is a technical and musical tour de force for the advanced tuba player and a playfully entertaining demonstration of contemporary sounds and stylistic devices for the listener. Michael Forbes
