Description:
In 1774, Gluck had undertaken to provide six stage works for the Paris Académie Royale de Musique. He partly fulfilled this commission with reworkings of works already premiered in Vienna, such as "Orfeo ed Euridice" (BA 5845-90)/In the case of the Parisian Alceste (1776), which Gluck had also originally composed for Vienna (1767), it is a completely new version that became the prototype of the so-called reform opera: The libretto, for example, was translated from Italian into French and transformed at the same time, but the music was also fundamentally reworked. For example, Gluck recomposed the recitatives anew and rearranged, extended or deleted some scenes/The rejection by the audience finally prompted the composer to redesign Act III, including the insertion of Hercules as Alcestes' savior. In this form, the opera was ultimately a great success.
