Louis Spohr’s *Des Heilands letzte Stunden* (The Savior’s Last Hours), composed in 1835, is one of the most significant Passion oratorios of the 19th century. The freely adapted text by the well-known journalist Friedrich Rochlitz inspired Spohr to compose a magnificent musical setting of the Passion narrative, from Gethsemane through Jesus’s trial to his burial. Dramatic folk choruses, chromatically colored lamentations, poetic, finely orchestrated arias, and an impressive soundscape depicting the trembling earth at the moment of death on the cross—accompanied by parallel timpani rolls in G/A—characterize this work, which lasts about an hour and a half. At the time, the oratorio was performed in many cities in Germany as well as in England, including at major music festivals. What was missing was a modern edition with which the oratorio could be performed today. This critical edition, complete with all performance materials, represents a magnificent new discovery for concerts during Passiontide.
