Immediately after completing Paulus in 1836, Mendelssohn considered composing another oratorio. However, a whole decade was to pass before he composed 'Elijah', which is based on the story of the biblical prophet from the First Book of Kings. When he received an offer to write a larger work for the music festival in Birmingham, Mendelssohn finally began work on the oratorio. Elijah' was premiered there in 1846 with great success and has enjoyed unbroken popularity ever since. Following the premiere, Mendelssohn revised the oratorio, removing entire numbers and adding new ones. In this version, in which the work is still performed today, 'Elijah' was first heard in London in 1847. Just in time for the Mendelssohn Year 2009, Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton, Professor at Florida State University, is presenting a new critical edition of the oratorio. The edition reflects the latest state of research and offers both the English and German text versions of the work. A critical report completes the new edition. - One of Mendelssohn's most popular works with the latest editorial standards - Bärenreiter Urtext, for the first time with the numbers of the original version - English and German vocal texts - Critical report (English)
