Description:
Imeneo was performed for the first time on November 22, 1740 at the theater in Lincoln's Inn Field in London; a second performance took place on December 13, 1740. In contrast to the variety of events and intricate plot typical of opera seria, "Imeneo" presents a straightforward plot, dramatically clear and musically exquisite. The arranger of the libretto is unknown.
Händel wrote the opera for his last season in London, but he performed it again in Dublin on March 24 and 31, 1742 - presumably in concert - as a "serenata". Handel altered the score from 1740 for these performances. The appendix to the vocal score reproduces the changes for this version.
The vocal score is based on the original text of the score in the Hallische Händel-Ausgabe. The German translation and the piano reduction were provided by Michael Pacholke.
