The cantata dates from Bach's Weimar period. The instrumental scoring with four violas and basso continuo, to which two recorders led at octave intervals to viola I and II are added in a Leipzig performance, is unique in Bach's cantata oeuvre; it gives the work a dark, soft sound in four movements, which is slightly brightened by the flutes. With an instrumental sinfonia, a short secco and an extended accompagnato recitative, each with arioso interludes, as well as a short soprano aria and a simple final chorale, the piece does not require a large performance apparatus. And there is plenty for fans of instrumental figures that interpret the text.
