Description:
Among Verdi's numerous compositions, the Messa da Requiem remains unique as a work of sacred music. It was composed as a musical memorial to the Italian national poet Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi deeply admired, and was premiered in Milan Cathedral on the first anniversary of his death on May 22, 1874. The exploration of many extremes places Verdi's musical language entirely at the service of a liturgy dramatized with musical means. The edition is based on the autograph score as the main source and makes one of the most important Requiem settings of the 19th century available in a modern scholarly edition. In addition to the musical text, the score contains a detailed preface in three languages, a critical report with information on the source, edition and readings.
